The group was formed in the 1970s by Colin Green, the musical director, due to interest from parents waiting for their children during violin lessons. After running for 15 years, it lapsed and was restarted in about 1990 as part of the Salford Music Service. When Colin left the service in 1999, he continued with the group and it was officially launched as Lowry Strings Group. Following a grant from the National Lottery in Stern, who died this week at age 81, was one of the great violinists of the 20th century, a master who could coax sounds of unbelievable subtlety and intensity from an odd-shaped wooden box with four strings.
